Information about the ABS Research Development Grants

Since 2015 the ABS has awarded a number of research development grants.  The grants aim to support the following projects:

  • Projects seeking funding for the initial development of clinical trials
  • Systematic reviews
  • Audits designed to inform the design of a study or future research
  • Fellowships/ Pump priming
  • Trainee collaboratives
  • Basic science research (in particular where research proposals address breast surgical research priorities, for example as identified by the Gap Analysis, and where potential clinical relevance can be demonstrated)

2024 Research Development Grants

The deadline for the 2024 ABS Research Development Grants has passed.

The applicants will find out the outcome of their submissions in early 2025

iBRA-NET - National Audit of Magseed localisation of breast lesions

James Harvey, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Magseed

This project recruited 2300 patients from 35 UK breast units. The main study finding has demonstrated that Magseeds are as good as wires at localising breast cancer but with logistical advantages to the healthcare providers. The study has also led to further commercial arms of the study being open using localizer, Savi Scout, and Pintuition.

The Flame Study

Co-development of a consensus-based pathway to improve access and outcomes for women seeking FLat symmetry as an Alternative to breast reconstruction after Mastectomy for brEast cancer

Chief Investigator

Katherine Fairhurst NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer, University of Bristol

Co-applicants

Shelley Potter Professor of Surgical Oncology & NIHR Clinician Scientist, University of Bristol

Sam Brunsden Flat Friends Trustee

Kerry Avery Associate Professor in Health Services Research, University of Bristol

This work has been funded following our recently published systematic review (see reference below), which does not provide any evidence indicating that women regret their decision for symmetrising mastectomy, but suggests that surgeons’ denial of flat symmetry as an option negatively affects their experiences and outcomes. The aim of this further work is to co-develop a consensus-based pathway to improve access and outcomes for women seeking contralateral symmetrising mastectomy as an alternative to breast reconstruction after a unilateral mastectomy for breast cancer.
